Lawyers One Key To Attracting Clients
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Lawyers: One Key to Attracting Clients Who was the first to say: All other things being equal people want to do business with people (lawyers) they know, like and trust. In his book âThe Likeability Factor,â Tim Sanders includes a chapter on âThe Four Elements of Likeability.â Those elements are: They say our country wants to elect a President the majority knows, likes and trusts. The 2016 election may have changed that. Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton had unfavorabilty ratings over 50%. I learned a great deal from President Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, President Reagan and President Clinton. Each of those Presidents connected with their audience. In varying degrees they each demonstrated friendliness, relevance, empathy and realness. Many young lawyers I coached believed they were at a competitive disadvantage because of their age and experience. I said that was the wrong way to think. I told young lawyers to focus on what they were, not on what they werenât When I coached young lawyers I shared with them that about 10% of legal work is âbet the company.â Clients will hire the best-known senior âgo toâ lawyer to handle that work. At the other end, about 20% to 30% of legal work is commodity work. Clients will hire whoever is willing to do that work for the lowest price. Lawyers in a firm of any size, are not able to compete on price and would not want to compete on price. Finally, at least 60% of legal work is neither bet the company or commodity work. Clients will hire lawyers they like and trust and with whom they feel some connection. How can you position yourself to have the best opportunity to be hired by clients for that work? First, you have to be a capable lawyer. But, that will not be enough. You need to also be likeable with the elements Tim Sanders describes. You need to be friendly. Tim Sanders uses a quote from Bert Drecker, a communication expert: âIf you want to get your message across . . .., You must first persuade the listeners first brain that you represent warmth, comfort and safety.â Next, you must be relevant. As a lawyer that means understanding your clientâs industry and company and understanding your client contactâs needs. Next, you need to be empathetic. You must be able to see things from your clientâs point of view. To do that you need to ask relevant questions and then listen, listen, listen. Finally, you need to be real. Have you ever said about a person: What you see is what you get. If you have, then you know what being real means. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Reference Checks
Tips to Get the Most Out of Reference Checks Tips to Get the Most Out of Reference Checks Meetings uncover a ton about possible recruits - yet they may leave a few stones unturned. Reference checks can give you more knowledge into an applicant's understanding, capacities, hard working attitude and that's only the tip of the iceberg. They're similar to protection strategies that could spare you the expense of a terrible recruit. Time and again, however, recruiting directors rush through or even avoid this crucial advance. To be doubly certain about a competitor's capacities before making a proposition for employment, it assists with discovering increasingly about that individual from different sources. Here are a few prescribed procedures for reference watching that can help improve this significant part of your recruiting procedure. Try not to avoid any responsibility Occupied chiefs frequently delegate reference checks to HR staff or another individual from the meeting group. However, in case you're the one the recently recruited employee will answer to, it's significant that you require some investment to address their references by and by - in light of the fact that you have the most in question. Set aside effort to get ready before reaching anybody Get sorted out and aggregate a rundown of reference check questions. Here are some essential questions: What were the competitor's essential obligations and last employment title? What are their most exceptional abilities or characteristics? What extra preparing would they be able to profit by? How could they respond and react to input or productive analysis? OK rehire them? Why or why not? Get the telephone It's fast and simple to just email inquiries to everybody on an applicant's rundown of references, yet this strategy won't yield the best outcomes. For one, your email may never at any point make it to their inbox on the off chance that they have a severe spam channel. Talking legitimately with an individual is perfect, as individuals will in general really expound in telephone discussions. Try not to ask close-finished inquiries Word your reference check inquiries such that requires insightful replies, and abstain from speaking for the reference. For instance, don't ask, You think Jill is a cooperative person, right? A superior method to state this would be, Would you be able to enlighten me regarding Jill's joint effort aptitudes? Listen intently for things that are not said Focus on signals that show a non-support, for example, ditherings in a reference's reaction or qualifying explanations like, He was a genuinely decent accountant. Also, the individual's tone may be educating when talking regarding certain parts of a previous representative. Archive the calls Make a spreadsheet and log the date and time of each reference check. Take great notes during the discussion. A while later, write down all impressions you gathered from the call. Dodge cold pitching Start with the references the up-and-comer has given to you. On the off chance that you need to contact any individual who isn't on that rundown, for example, previous chief, request that the up-and-comer make the association first. To do in any case may appear to be amateurish and placed your organization in a terrible light. Furthermore, never call a current manager without the competitor's express consent. Focus on assortment Some activity applicants will give employing directors a rundown of their previous supervisors. Others may just give contact data to present and past associates. For a 360-degree image of an expected recruit's specialized and nontechnical abilities, collegiality, qualities and shortcomings, etc, attempt to converse with more than one sort of reference. 7 Traits That Make You a Great Candidate
7 Traits That Make You a Great Candidate 7 Traits That Make You a Great Candidate This post initially showed up on YouTern. I frequently get asked regularly: what do you search for in a likely fresh recruit or assistant that doesn't have forever and a day of understanding on their resume? As a matter of fact, my answer regularly relies upon what we're searching for most at that specific second. In any case, these seven attributes reliably ring a bell, paying little mind to the job: 1. Ready to overlook sets of expectations I've been a major fanatic of this attribute since I read a post by Jeff Haden in Inc. The truth of the matter is that as organizations are relied upon to accomplish more with less, and anticipate the equivalent from colleagues, this is unadulterated gold. To be the first to answer the all involved deck call â" or just to hop in when others may truly require your assistance â" is really a decent indication of an uncommon worker (paying little heed to workforce experience). Be that as it may⦠to overlook the set of working responsibilities before you land the position â" and the inability to adjust your introductory letter, resume and meeting precisely to the prerequisites of the expected set of responsibilities â" implies fate to your office. Live and inhale the expected set of responsibilities until you land the position⦠then overlook it! Your work presently is to show you are all in as a colleague. 2. Unendingly coachable Coachability â" the specialty of having the option to tune in and afterward adjust to what exactly you've discovered â" is at the head of my rundown for fresh recruits â" and one of the primary attributes I search for during the meeting. Some portion of this exceptionally looked for after quality is the eagerness to at times not be right, and be ready to gain from the missteps made. Uncommon workers (and directors!) can save inner self, tune in to other colleagues and coaches, and at last think of the best answer for the test they're confronting. 3. An enterprising soul The present ability is driven by a great deal more innovative enthusiasm than past ages. Without being asked, they acknowledge obligation regarding process improvement. They make the additional move to satisfy a client. They tackle issues the current group probably won't have perceived. They approach their occupations in an entirely innovative manner â" where nothing impedes finding an answer, or a superior way. To contend well, a passage level worker or understudy must show this characteristic to be viewed as a Top 5 applicant. 4. Can explain what makes them interesting The working scene â" and the seat on the opposite side of the meeting work area â" is unreasonably populated with me-also clones (cloned characters, cloned apparel, cloned levels of exertion⦠) apparently reluctant to be somewhat unique. Try not to be reluctant to show a little character and some young exuberance. Be interesting, recount to a decent anecdote concerning why you care about existence and your work â" and have a ton of fun! 5. Energetic about existence and work Uncommon workers basically don't permit themselves (or simply haven't been around sufficiently long, maybe) to get tainted by characters, workplace issues and issues. They hold their energy for the undertaking, the organization crucial their colleagues. Generally significant, regardless of what else is going on around them, they truly care about the client experience. From the main meeting on, they comprehend that enthusiasm is infectious (and so is antagonism). 6. A serious nature Excellent representatives despise losing. They will develop until their eyes go hazy, make arrangements well outside the famous box and work the hours fundamental⦠to win. Not with the succeed at all costs outlook, obviously â" and not without remembering different characteristics referenced here. However, through self-inspiration and humble certainty, they comprehend that making a cursory effort while claiming to be occupied simply isn't an option. The best new workers set themselves in a place to contend well â" consistently. 7. High enthusiastic knowledge Enthusiastic Intelligence (EQ) is a term frequently utilized in business by HR and ability supervisors. Adequately, an individual with high EQ is fit for preparing feelings â" both theirs and those of different colleagues in a gainful way. What's significant here is that new representatives â" youthful workers, explicitly â" aren't yet expected to show others how its done with high EQ. The individuals who do⦠and can show this quality during the meeting procedure⦠often become epic workers. Having at least two of these seven abilities or potentially perspectives puts you well in front of most occupation searchers vieing for a similar activity or temporary job as you. Having at least four makes you, from my point of view, an applicant worth seeking after⦠at this moment! What number of do you have? Furthermore, what is your arrangement for adding considerably more to your incentive? President and Founder of YouTern, Mark Babbitt is a sequential guide who has been cited in the Wall Street Journal, Mashable and Forbes with respect to pursuit of employment, profession improvement, temporary positions and advanced education's job in planning developing ability for the workforce. A keynote speaker and blogger, Mark's commitments incorporate Huffington Post, Bloomberg News, Switch and Shift, and Under30CEO.

US Colleges Offer Opportunities for Intl Job Skills Development
US Colleges Offer Opportunities for Intl Job Skills Development Developing leadership qualities Students who decide to leave their home countries to attend college in the United States share a desire to succeed that transcends their fear of the unknown. That courage and determination is important for success in college and in the âreal world,â after graduation. If youâre going to study in the U.S., think about how you can use that experience to develop qualities that appeal to employers. Regardless of whether you stay in the U.S. after graduation or return to your home country, you can develop skills that appeal to employers everywhere. What employers want As international students search for U.S. scholarships and grants, they find many awards are based on more than just grades. According to âPassport to American Education,â by HCC Medical Insurance, volunteerism, leadership and communication are all abilities that help students get scholarships. Those same qualities can help you get a job, too. Developing leadership qualities Good leadership depends on your ability to interact respectfully with other people and motivate them to achieve a common goal. Thatâs why joining a sports team or social club can be a great way to begin honing your leadership skills. When youâre part of a large group, there will be times when the group needs to reach a majority opinion about something â" for example, when to hold a fundraiser or what your goals are for the next quarter. Express your opinion and explain how you made your decision â" thatâs the first step in inspiring others to share your point of view. Take advantage of any mentoring opportunities at your school â" you can learn from a mentor and become one yourself. Volunteer to be a club officer, too, so you can learn more about the administration of a group. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Tip: Make a note of your accomplishments in extracurricular activities. You may be talking about those experiences in a job interview someday. Why communication matters Public speaking and leadership go hand-in-hand â" think of a renowned world leader and his or her ability to speak with authority and passion. Great leaders need to be able to speak confidently and honestly in order to inspire trust. The same is true in your everyday life, so college is a great time to think about how you can be a stronger communicator. Take more writing courses than youâre required to take, and learn how to compose an effective email. Employers look for candidates who communicate clearly, concisely and respectfully, and these classes can help get you there. Volunteerism and character Volunteering is one of the best ways to expand your professional networks. Youâll meet other like-minded people who may someday be in positions to offer you a job. Plus, volunteerism shows employers that youâre a team player whos willing to make sacrifices. In fact, a survey via the social network LinkedIn a few years ago found that 41 percent of employers place equal value on employment history and volunteer history, with 20 percent saying they made a hiring decision based on volunteer activities. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} The fact that you were willing to take a risk and travel to the U.S. for college will give you an advantage in a competitive job market. But college offers many opportunities to develop the other skills that employers look for, too. So focus on getting good grades, but strive to be a well-rounded person.

Talking Salary in the Interview Process
Talking Salary in the Interview Process Q: How do you address your salary or hourly expectations when an interviewer asks what youre currently making, and how much youre looking for in your next role? Im trying to elevate my position to a more managerial role with a salary increase, and I dont want my new salary to be dependent on what Im currently making. A: This question is very frequently asked in the interview by recruiters and hiring managers, both for informational purposes and also to gauge whether or not a candidate fits within the financial stipulations of the position. Be Honest About Your Current Salary First, in addressing your current salary, you always want to be honest, as this is on-the-record information that they can, and will, validate. If youre caught lying, it could cost you the position, and at the very least, it will damage your reputation. So be upfront, and then how you address the next piece of this question will depend upon your job search goals. Im currently making $53,000 as a base salary, with a potential for performance-based bonuses. Share Your Expected Salary for This Role Next, you want to address the salary that you are looking to make in the next role, with the likelihood that youll be taking on additional responsibilities, or moving up the chain. Its natural that there will be a gap between your current salary and your expected future salary. Sometimes that gap may be larger than feels comfortable communicating. This can particularly be the case if you work for a company where your compensation is lower than market demand, but you accepted the role in exchange for other perks, such as increased vacation time, flex hours, or the chance to get in at the ground level of a startup organization. Its okay to communicate that aspect as well when trying to sell yourself at a higher level. Offer a Salary Range If youre not sure what the position pays, offer them a range with the lower end being the minimum of what youre willing to go in at, and the higher range being the ideal so that ideally they come back somewhere in the middle. Im making $53,000 currently, and since Im targeting a more managerial-focused role, Im aiming for something in the range of $60,000-65,000. or My current base salary is $50,000. I was one of the first employees hired, and it was an exciting opportunity, so I agreed to come in at a slightly lower rate than what I typically see out there in the market. In my next role, Im ideally targeting something in the range of $65,000 to $70,000, which is more on par with my level. Express Your Value Numbers aside, its your responsibility to convey the value of what youre asking for. Dont be afraid to voice your interest in moving up, taking on more responsibility, and building upon your existing skill sets. What Next? A solid resume is the key to landing the job interview. Twitter, social media, and unmashing the mashable
Twitter, social media, and unmashing the mashable When I started doing Twitter, I put my Twitter feed on the sidebar of my blog. It seemed smart: more content means more traffic, and more traffic is good. But after two weeks of Twitter, I removed it. And then, when I was blogging about important topics like ditching Hebrew school as a career harbinger, commenters asked what happened to my Twitter feed. Well, the Twitter feed is right here on Twitter. Just like my LinkedIn profile is on LinkedIn, and the potted plants Ive collected on Facebook are on Facebook. Because mashing our social media together for the purpose of marketing one feed to another dilutes the value of social media. If you express yourself in the same way on a blog and on Twitter, then you dont need both. Each of us is multi-faceted. With a selection of media to choose from, we can express different parts of ourselves in different ways. Its clear to me that blogging is best for expressing big ideas. If you cant convey new ideas on your blog, then you probably wont get a lot of traffic. And most blogs that do well have a single theme and the audience can depend on the theme dictating the content of the blog. But Twitter is not good for fleshed-out ideas. I see people using Twitter for a lot of stuff, but not for fleshed-out ideas. And Flickr is good for expressing passion. Way better than, say, Twitter. So it strikes me as really lame that we have such a wide range of media at our disposal yet people are using that range to convey the same aspect of themselves: the personal brand they are creating for social media. Ironically, personal branding mostly rewards consistency, and using different media for different aspects of ourselves is not typically what builds brands. But none of us is so narrow to fit completely into the brand we present on a blog. There is more to each of us. So I am playing with Twitter right now, seeing what part of me feels most natural to be in Twitter. This is the same thing we do as we make a new friend. We figure out what combination of the things that make up our personality will be best with this person. Thats why were a little different with each person we know. As it turns out, Twitter feels very intimate to me. Its a small burst, and small means intimate. Its never a rant, because theres not enough room, and its always immediate becausein keeping with Twitter conventionsits about what Im doing now. Mashing all social media together to create one image of ourselves doesnt make sense because we are all already accustomed to showing certain parts of ourselves only in certain parts of our lives. We all know, for instance, that women dont talk about blow jobs at work, even though they give plenty of them. And men dont talk about the details of project management on a date, because theyd never get another blow job. Its acceptable to have different places in your life for different aspects of your personality. So dont flatten yourself by presenting only perfect consistency across Twitter and LinkedIn and blogs and Facebook. Also, people who want to meet you in one format, wont necessarily want to meet you in another, and thats fine. Jason Warner, at Google, for example, explained that he doesnt want to check out your MySpace photos before he hires you because its not the part of you hes expecting to show up at work. I actually already have experience switching media for different parts of me, and Im telling you, it has served me well: I got into graduate school in Boston University based on my ability to write about sex. I spent my time in grad school writing hypertext fiction. I lectured at Brown University, I lectured at the Sorbonne, and Im in Wikipedia for my sex writing in hypertext. But when I had the opportunity to write career advice, I knew hypertext wasnt the right format. So I started over, with a different way of thinking, in a different medium. Sometimes I call this a braided career. Sometimes I call this bad branding. Its a fine line. And some people will say that if youre truly integrated, you will be your same self everywhere. I disagree. I think that the most socially adept people highlight the parts of themselves that will be most interesting to the people at hand. So I am keeping Twitter separate. I want to play and explore and I dont care about being consistent with my brand there. I want to show another part of myself on Twittera part that I wouldnt necessarily show on the blog. What is social media for, really? If traffic is your holy grail, then you need to point all your social media to one spot, in a sort of exercise in cross-pollination. If its not to build traffic, then its to build connections. And those connections can improve your life. So give yourself permission to use social media to explore all the aspects of your personality, rather than just the one you picked for your official personal brand. It makes sense that you should give yourself some leeway to be inconsistent in who you areand thereby consistent with who are completely arein social media. Explore your full identity as you explore the media.

Do employers actually care which university you went to
Do employers actually care which university you went to It may have been a whole four years ago (FYI, time flies at university) but I still remember my A-level results day vividly. That excruciating suspense while you wait to open the envelope that, so it seems at the time, will define the rest of your life. Like most, I had my heart set on one specific university. I had been encouraged by teachers to apply for the very best; to aim for the top 10 universities in the country, the Russell Group ones, the ones that would look best on my CV. However, I was determined to find a university that suited me, not because it was high on a league table, but because it was based in a vibrant city, with a good nightlife, friendly people and the right vibe â" somewhere I could call home for the next few years. Luckily, I found somewhere which ticked all the boxes, but the pressure to get into the âbestâ university was still very real. But do employers actually care whether you went to Sheffield or Sussex, Liverpool or Lincoln? Will they judge your university for not being in the top 20? Should we really be placing all this pressure on ourselves to get into the best? The short answer is, often no. University rankings do have value This is not to say that university rankings are completely pointless. The universities that are ranked as the âbestâ do often have higher quality teaching, better resources and first-class lecturers. Russell Group universities have a greater focus on cutting edge research, and being taught by those working in the field has obvious benefits. And letâs face it, who are we kidding if we pretend that Oxbridge graduates donât dominate a lot of the most powerful positions in society? According to the Sutton Trust, 82% of barristers went to Oxford or Cambridge, as did 78% of judges, 53% of top solicitors, and 45% of leading journalists. Depressing stuff, I know. So the university you go to does count for something. But increasingly top graduate employers are starting to disregard educational âprestigeâ in favour of hands on experience, in depth knowledge of the field and fresh ideas. And these are things you can gain, regardless of which university you go to. But it depends on your industry Obviously, we canât apply a blanket judgement across all degree subjects and careers. Certain industries, such as engineering, science and finance, will still look favourably on graduates from the top institutions. But in a lot of other sectors, especially roles which are less specific and technical, employers are turning towards different factors, like work experience and evidence of leadership. So a year in industry or a committee role on a society can sway their judgement more than the university you attended. Education-blind applications are on the rise Many companies are starting to introduce âeducation-blindâ applications, where your school and university are hidden, to prevent any unconscious bias from creeping into the decision making process. EY, one of the UKâs biggest graduate recruiters introduced a similar policy, as well as scrapping its requirement for a 2:1 degree or 300 UCAS points. The results were announced earlier this year: 18 per cent of its 2016 UK graduate and school leaver intake would have been ineligible to apply before the policy was introduced. Talking of the scheme, Maggie Stilwell, EYâs managing partner for talent for the UK and Ireland, said âWe hope we have inspired others to do the same; driving social change.â Itâs all about your skills The trend towards an increasing focus on skills and experience, rather than educational track record has been growing for a number of years. Back in 2014 Laszlo Bock, Google vice president of people operations, talked of how tech firms arenât so concerned with hiring graduates from prestigious universities, and the rise of non-graduate employees at Google was on the rise. It seems that as the job market evolves, and innovative tech companies start to rise in power, traditional factors that influence candidatesâ employment are losing their strength. So if you donât get into your first choice university today, or if you go through clearing, donât let it get you down. Exactly which university you end up in is not as important as you might think, and definitely wonât stop you from going on to achieve big things with you career. Speaking from personal experience, in all the job interviews I have ever had, employers have been much more interested in my hands on, practical experience through societies and work experience placements than the university I attended. In fact, I donât think Iâve been asked about it once. We still have some way to go before we break the Oxbridge elite and challenge the university status quo, but employers increasingly just donât care which university you attended and care more about you as a person, which is no bad thing. 5 Tips for Professional Networking
5 Tips for Professional Networking Everyone has heard about the importance of networking, and itâs no secret the most successful executives generally have a large network. The more you network, the more youâll be able to boost your executive profile and earn yourself a great reputation within your industry and beyond. Contrary to popular belief, you donât have to be actively looking for a job in order to effectively network. Here are some tips to consider regarding professional networking at any stage of your career. Start With Your Own Network People who are uncomfortable networking should start with their own network. When you optimize your LinkedIn profile, youâll make connections with your current co-workers and other professionals outside of your organization. Find your comfort zone at first by talking to familiar faces and re-establishing relationships. Your Network Needs Constant Attention Even if youâre comfortable with your job and have no intention of visiting the top resume writing services any time soon, you still have to give some attention to your network. Maintaining solid relationships with your network will help you stay informed within your industry, have your recruiting list built up at all times and know whatâs happening with your competition. Donât Prioritize Yourself Everyone is naturally more comfortable talking about themselves. However, donât fall into that trap. Instead, ask leading questions to the person youâre talking to and let them do most of the talking. When you let the other person talk about themselves while you listen attentively, youâll be surprised at how much they will admire you. Eliminate The Salesman Mentality Many people make the mistake of thinking a professional networking event is only to sell yourself. That couldnât be further from the truth. While your executive profile can be promoted at these events, you should also eliminate any trace of a salesman mentality you have. Instead, focus your effort and attention on developing new relationships and learn how you can help them without selling any services. Sharing your experiences genuinely with another professional will go a long way in boosting your reputation. Reach Out To A Mentor Most executives have a mentor very close to them within their organization. Finding another mentor outside of your inner circle can be beneficial as well. You may want to learn something new, develop professionally in different ways or even want to start the process of searching for a new job. If thatâs the case, then having the help of a mentor combined with utilizing the top resume writing services can help you tremendously. Professional Resume Services wants to help you beyond simply writing your executive profile for you. We enjoy being involved with your career, no matter what stage you are at. Best Benefits Here Are the Work Perks of The Future
Best Benefits Here Are the Work Perks of The Future âCreativeâ work perks are a contentious topic. As the talent wars schlep on, so does the widespread eye-rolling over the nap pods, kegerators, and âtake your dog to workâ days companies are trying to win them with. But 10 years from now, free snacks and ping pong tables will be old hat. With any luck, the perks that replace them will be way more valuable. MONEY asked a bunch of career coaches and workplace âfuturistsâ for insights on the benefits weâll be talking about in 2028. Hereâs their (encouragingly ping pong-free) list. A Cheaper Commute In the race for self-driving cars, employees will be the real winners, predicts Ketan Kapoor, CEO of the hiring platform Mettl. âSeveral companies will own a fleet,â he says. âItâs going to be a sought-after perk that takes away the frustration of driving, [something] that bothers millions of commuters every day.â Whether Elon Musk gets his way or not, the companies of the future will likely invest in some sort of car share programs, relieving workers of the stresses of car ownership, says Dana Case, Director of Operations at MyCorporation.com. âBy 2028, most employees will have ditched the expenses that come with having a car of their own for rideshares. Employers, especially at major corporations, will adjust accordingly, creating all expenses paid car share programs to get their team to and from the office.â Chesky_Wâ"Getty Images/iStockphoto Universal Student Loan Reimbursement Only 4% of employers offer student loan repayment today, according to a 2017 study from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). But thatâs about to change, according to Dr. Kat Cohen, career coach and founder of the college admissions counseling company IvyWise. A survey from the nonprofit American Student Assistance, also published last year, shows that nearly 90% of young workers with student loans would commit to a job for five years if the company helped pay off their tuition debt, she notes. In an era of record employee turnover, âthe prevalence of this perk is likely to rise,â Cohen says. The New âWellnessâ As âself careâ becomes more of a priority, companies will encourage workers to bake a little more âme timeâ into their work weeks, says Sarah Brophy, Design Director at IA Interior Architects, which has designed workspaces for companies like American Airlines and Match.com. âProviding amenities in the workplace that give employees back their free time out of the office are taking hold,â she says. âWe have several clients who are providing on site barber shops and nail salons to facilitate more quality time for endeavors we love when the work day is over.â âWellness,â another buzzword for activities like yoga and meditation that promote emotional and physical health, has long been a corporate talking point. But doing sun salutations in a conference room isnât everyoneâs bag, and employers are finally catching on, says Denise OâMalley, the head of a corporate wellness program consultancy. âIn a recent survey for a construction company, we discovered 100% of the employees enjoy camping,â she says. âOur recommendation [was] to bring in a nutritionist to talk about âEating Healthy in the Great Outdoors.â âEmployees like to choose the perks and benefits that they want ⦠they just want their employers to pay for it.â Better âGreen Spacesâ Companies that invest in outdoor areas for people to meet with their teams, eat lunch, and mingle after work, tend to have a more productive workforce, research shows. In the future, these spaces will evolve to accommodate for high-speed WI-Fi, power outlets, and weather-friendly co-working spaces, predicts Ben Donsky, Vice President of Biederman Redevelopment Ventures Corporation, which specializes in outdoor design for commercial, residential, and public spaces. âInstead of passive gardens or sterile landscapes, youâll see outdoor areas that act as true extensions of offices,â he says. âWinter use in colder climates might look like a small group of coworkers conducting a team meeting around a fire pit. Companies that figure out how to use these spaces year-round will help stimulate creative thinking among employees no matter the season.â Blend Images-Colin Andersonâ"Getty Images Stronger Savings (If Youâre Good!) Doug Dahl, an employee benefits attorney at Bass, Berry Sims in Nashville, Tenn., predicts retirement savings plans will incorporate incentive programs that reward good financial behavior (i.e., paying your credit card on time) with extra profit sharing or 401(k) contributions. These features havenât caught on yet â" thereâs currently a federal rule that prohibits âconditioningâ the receipt of profit sharing. But Dahl says that could change. âMindsets are shifting, and there is even a ruling pending at the IRS that would allow employer contributions to be conditioned upon employeesâ making student loan payments,â he says. âThese ideas could significantly change incentives and motivations for retirement savings.â A Different Kind of Day Care âThe âsecondaryâ work for a growing number of employees is that of caring for aging parents,â says Rick Lauber, author of The Successful Caregiverâs Guide. Some companies have started offering free programs, work accommodations, and time off provisions for workers caring for an elderly parent. Soon, Lauber predicts, more companies will follow suit. âIt can be very costly and time-extensive to hire and train new staff, Lauber says. âPaid caregiving leave ⦠benefits the working caregiver as well as the company.â Executive coach Debra Benton takes it a step further. In the future, she predicts, businesses will offer âliteral daycare centers for seniors.â Like daycare for children, these programs will help keep aging parents occupied and teach them new skills. Unlike day care centers, theyâll benefit a generation of âmillennials whoâve lived at home till age 34 pay back their parents support,â she says. Better Community Engagement Companies love to boast about their philanthropic arms, but the charity work and volunteer programs most subscribe to can be micromanaged affairs with little employee participation. In the future, though, employee-sponsored community, civic, and political engagement, will take off, says workplace consultant Avery Blank. âRoadblocks to running for office and campaigning include not having a stream of money to support yourself or health insurance,â she says. â[New company perks] will allow employees to have a reduced schedule so that they can make money and have time to run a campaign. It will be another dimension of âwork-life balance.ââ

Gaping Gap How To Plug Holes In Your Work History - Work It Daily
Gaping Gap How To Plug Holes In Your Work History - Work It Daily How do you compensate on your resume for a gap in employment? Naturally, hiring managers want to see consistency; they want to see a work history that does not contain gaps. Things happen, though; there are personal and professional situations that sometimes come up â" things that are beyond your control. Related: How To Mention Unrelated Work Experience On Your Resume So, what do you do if you have resume gaps? You probably wonât have the opportunity to explain it, especially if you have applied online or are submitting career documents via web-based or other anonymous means. How do you present yourself in a compelling manner even with the gap? Here are some tips: Use A Hybrid Resume Style A hybrid resume style is particularly effective because it will allow you to bring relevant and results oriented data to the top of the document. For example, after you draft a summary and a core competency section - with effective words and phrases to help with key word search, you can create a âHighlights of Accomplishmentsâ section. It is in this section that you can draw upon experiences from previous roles. It will allow you to reveal notable accomplishments and the results derived to quickly engage the reader before she comes to the section of the document where professional experiences and actual dates are referenced. Given that you have a short window of time to make a compelling statement, use the highlights of accomplishments area to quickly demonstrate your skills. Capture five to six statements in bullet point fashion in this area to allow for easy reading. You also might consider making the first part of the statement in bold. This will draw the readerâs eye to the section. Just List The Years You donât need to reference the months on your resume. It is OK to just list the years. If the gap is short this will help bridge it. Is this deceptive? No. You are going to fill out an application for employment where you will divulge the exact of employment. I am not suggesting that you try to mislead a potential employer. The idea is to âget the interview.' Once there, you can explain the reasons for the lapse in employment. At that time, you will be able to sell yourself and demonstrate why you are right for the job. Use The Cover This is a perfect example of why a cover letter is important. A cover letter will allow you to explain a gap. This is not something that can be done on the resume. The cover letter is the ideal place to help the reader understand you took time off to care for an elderly or ailing parent, spent time writing a book, or some other personal issue. Your explanation can be brief; the cover will enable you to quickly provide a plausible explanation. Omit One Or More Jobs Depending upon how long you have been in the workplace, you donât necessarily need to list all of your experiences, particularly if you have a lengthy work history. Jobs that extend beyond 15 years can be referenced in a previous experience section where you can reference Company name and title. Jobs beyond that time can be left off completely Use Your Network Leveraging your network is a great way to obtain a position, especially when you have a gap. Who better to vouch for your credibility and value than people you know? A strong reputation will speak for itself, and your network can be there to help and support you during your search. Volunteer A great way to remain involved and connected is through volunteer activities, which can take up as much time as you let them. Use time off wisely. If you have been downsized or fired, volunteering will enable you to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a collaborative environment. Volunteer work can be highly challenging and will allow you to provide critical information during an interview. Your commitment to yourself is a critical component to any job search. Utilize all of your tools and resources to present yourself in the best possible manner. This post was originally published at an earlier date. How to Contribute to a Positive Workplace
How to Contribute to a Positive Workplace How to Contribute to a Positive WorkplaceHow can you contribute to a positive workplace? We break down why its so important. TWEETCreating happy and positive workplaces is one of the biggest challenges organizations face today. We know this because Chief Happiness Officer is now a job.Getting people aligned with a company vision, caring about it, and actually having fun doing it, is a huge undertaking, which is why the responsibility cant just rest on the Chief Happiness Officers plate, or the CEOs, or your bosss. Its just like a good party. A good party takes into account ambience, physical environment, guests, food, beverages, and favors. But what really makes a good party? The people The same theory applies to workplaces. What often keeps people in jobs? Their co-workers. With the right attitude, you have the power to create happiness at work, contributing to a positive work place, and to be the type of co-worker who encourages people to le id only stay at their jobs, but enjoy them, too. Heres how 1. Show up.Woody Allen is quoted as saying, 80 percent of life is just showing up and the same goes for your workplace. What does it mean? It means mora than physically attending work. Clocking in, clocking out, will not generate workplace happiness and a positive workplace. You need to be present. When were working in the now youre able to perceive opportunities that are invisible to (your) co-workers who miss out on the power of the now. And in fact, be more successful. Showing up means being open to the now and in the zone to process information without distilling it through the lens of the past or future. This act will help others lean in to what youre doing and encourage them to do the same.2. Join in.Dont resist the fun, seriously. A study out of Norway found that people who participated in cultural activities like joining a club reported lower levels of anxiety and wirtschaftskrise as well as a higher quality of life. In most workplaces, especially in a positive workplace, there are community type activities from social committee, health and safety, volunteer, new hire buddies and more. The great thing about joining in is that not only will you have fun and make yourself happier at work, youll also be building out your partal brand in the process. Beyond that youll be leading by example and be able to encourage others to do the same. Think of it this way, if you have a workplace full of Joining-In types youll have a workplace thats going to satisfy you on more levels than just a paycheck. Joining in is like being the lighthouse to negative people. You do your thing, shine brightly, and soon others (especially those naysayer types) well come into the light, too, and join in. Its contagious.3. Speak up.If Joining In is being the lighthouse, then Speaking Up is being the flashlight. Most of the time being the lighthouse is the best way to influence those around you. Its the old, you catch more bees with honey than with vinegar story. Plus, when people come into the light on their own accord, its way more impactful for them. But then there are the times when you need to encourage them a little more directly. In a work environment, negative people are like mold, and there are times that call for you to protect yourself from the mold by speaking up. Speaking up means calling out unfair behaviour like bullying or harassment. Or, asserting yourself with a negative person and calling out their B.S. Using an assertive communication tactic, you can identify the behavior, what you want, and the impact, without feeling like its a full-blown confrontation. By doing this, youre influencing not only the parties involved but possibly the greater kollektiv, department and company. When we tolerate less bad behavior from others, we inspire others to do the same. If everyone speaks up for the type of work environment they want, it will lead to a more positive, open environment in the long run. Be certain to speak up with diplomacy, grace, and facts. Leave the emotion on the doorstep.4. Become engaged. You might think I mean flipping on a switch and activating your Employee Engagement button, but I dont. Or, I do. Being engaged with something is a choice. If you disagree, stop reading now. You might be thinking, hey, thats HRs job Or, thats my bosss job And youre right, too. The way I see it is this HR Management can create an environment in which employees can choose to be motivated. So, take a look at the company. Examine where theyre headed and why, and consider if youre behind it. Are you a believer in the Vision? Sure, youll have questions like, is that the right boss for the job? Or, will the market respond? But putting that lightly aside, can you get behind it? If you can get behind it, you will be happier at work. Your engagement also goes beyond Mission and Vision. If youre happier, youll be shining bright and its a lot easier for others to follow your lead of po sitivity than to (continue) sulking.5. Be a leader. You do not need a big title to be a leader. Whether youre entry-level or an executive, you can evoke change from where you stand. It might not be earth shattering change, but you can make someones work experience better. Whether its becoming friends with someone and having someone to eat lunch with or brightening up someones day by recognizing them for a job well done, it is all of our jobs to generate team spirit and strengthen company culture. By sharing kudos, high-fives, and being positive in the face of adversity, you will be the kind of person everyone wants on their team - the Lighthouse person. The person whose light shines so brightly that soon enough everyone will be basking in it. Our emotions are all a matter of energy. If were negative, its like mold. Itll fester, grow, and spread. If were positive, itll shine bright. Others will seek out its warmth. By choosing to do something about your work environment, youre choosin g to make at least one person happier you. And think of it this way, in a worst case scenario, epic failure of attempts, youll only reach one person with your attempts. If you can make one persons work experience better, would you do it?Need help with your resume? Take advantage of our free critique todayRelated Articles
